The central story of Demeter revolves around the abduction of Persephone by Hades, god of the underworld.

During her wanderings, Demeter came to Eleusis, where she served as a nurse to the royal family's son.

She attempted to make the child immortal but was interrupted.

In gratitude for their hospitality, she taught the Eleusinians the secrets of agriculture and established the Eleusinian Mysteries, sacred religious rites that promised initiates a blessed afterlife.

Finally, Zeus intervened and ordered Hades to return Persephone.

However, because Persephone had eaten pomegranate seeds in the underworld, she was required to spend part of each year with Hades.

During these months, Demeter mourns and withdraws her gifts from the earth, creating winter.

When Persephone returns, Demeter rejoices, bringing spring and summer.

This myth explains the changing of seasons and the annual cycle of growth and decay.
