To aid their journey home, he gave Odysseus a sealed bag containing all the adverse winds, leaving only the favorable West Wind free to guide their ships.

However, when Odysseus's curious crew opened the bag while their leader slept, the released winds created a massive storm that blew them back to Aeolia.

Upon their return, Aeolus refused to help them again, believing their misfortune was a sign of divine disfavor.

Aeolus also played a role in other mythological tales.

In Virgil's Aeneid, Juno persuaded Aeolus to release the winds to create a storm that would destroy Aeneas's fleet.

However, Neptune, angry at this disturbance of his realm, calmed the seas and saved the Trojan ships.

This story demonstrates the complex relationships between different divine powers in Greek mythology.

The winds under Aeolus's control were not just natural forces but were believed to influence human affairs significantly.

Sailors particularly venerated Aeolus and the wind gods, offering prayers and sacrifices for favorable winds.
