He married the Nereid Amphitrite, though not before pursuing her relentlessly until she agreed to marry him.

Among his many offspring were both mortals and monsters, including the cyclops Polyphemus, the winged horse Pegasus (born from Medusa's blood), and the hero Theseus.

One of his most famous contests was with Athena for the patronage of Athens.

Poseidon struck the Acropolis with his trident, creating a well of salt water, while Athena created the olive tree.

The gods judged Athena's gift more valuable, and she became the city's patron deity.

In his anger, Poseidon flooded the Attic Plain, demonstrating his fearsome power.

Poseidon played significant roles in many Greek myths.

He helped build the walls of Troy with Apollo, then later supported the Greeks in the Trojan War when King Laomedon refused to pay them.

He also transformed Scylla into a monster and punished Minos by making his wife Pasiphae fall in love with a bull, leading to the birth of the Minotaur.

While not as prominent in leadership as Zeus or as involved with mortals as Athena, Poseidon's influence was vast and feared.

Sailors would sacrifice to him for safe passage, coastal cities built temples in his honor, and his wrath was legendary.

Even today, his name is synonymous with the power and unpredictability of the sea.
