Taking pity on him, Dionysus told Midas to wash in the River Pactolus, which would remove the golden touch.

This is why, according to legend, the sands of this river contained gold.

In another famous tale involving Midas, he was chosen to judge a musical contest between Apollo and Pan.

When Midas foolishly declared Pan the winner over Apollo's superior music, the offended Apollo transformed Midas's ears into those of a donkey.

Though Midas tried to hide his donkey ears under a large hat, his secret was eventually revealed, making "the ears of Midas" a lasting symbol of foolish judgment.
