Hercules (also known as Heracles) was the most famous hero in Greek mythology, known for his extraordinary strength and courage.

Born to Zeus and a mortal woman named Alcmene, he drew the wrath of Hera, Zeus's wife, who was jealous of Zeus's infidelity.

Despite being a demigod, Hercules's life was marked by both triumph and tragedy.

When Hercules was still an infant, Hera sent two serpents to kill him in his crib.

However, the baby Hercules displayed his incredible strength by strangling both snakes.

As he grew up, he was trained in warfare, chariot racing, and wrestling by various mentors, including the centaur Chiron.

However, Hera's hatred continued to plague him, and she drove him temporarily mad, causing him to kill his wife Megara and their children.

As penance for this terrible deed, he was required to perform his famous Twelve Labors under the service of King Eurystheus.

The Twelve Labors of Hercules became legendary: First, he had to slay the Nemean Lion, whose skin was impervious to weapons.

Second, he defeated the multi-headed Hydra, whose heads would multiply when cut off.

Third, he captured the Erymanthian Boar, and fourth, he caught the swift Ceryneian Hind.

His fifth labor was cleaning the Augean Stables in a single day, and sixth, he drove away the Stymphalian Birds.

The seventh labor involved capturing the Cretan Bull, and the eighth required taming Diomedes's man-eating horses.

For his ninth labor, Hercules had to obtain the girdle of Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons.

His tenth labor was stealing the cattle of the monster Geryon, and his eleventh was retrieving the golden apples of the Hesperides.

Finally, his most dangerous task was capturing Cerberus, the three-headed guard dog of the Underworld, and bringing it to the surface world, which he accomplished without using weapons.

Beyond his famous labors, Hercules participated in many other adventures.

He joined the Argonauts in their quest for the Golden Fleece, though he left the expedition early to search for his companion Hylas.

He also rescued Prometheus, who had been chained to a rock and tortured daily by Zeus's eagle, and saved Alcestis from death, wrestling with Thanatos (Death) himself.

Hercules's death came through tragic deception.

His second wife, Deianeira, believing she was using a love potion, gave him a tunic soaked in the poisonous blood of the centaur Nessus.

When Hercules put it on, the poison caused him such agony that he built a funeral pyre and burned himself to death.

After his death, Zeus granted him immortality and brought him to Mount Olympus, where he reconciled with Hera and married her daughter Hebe.

Throughout Greek mythology, Hercules represents the pinnacle of heroic strength and endurance.

His stories often demonstrate that even the mightiest hero must face consequences for his actions, and that true heroism involves not just physical strength, but also the courage to face one's own mistakes and make amends.

His labors became metaphors for overcoming seemingly impossible challenges, and his eventual apotheosis (elevation to godhood) represents the potential for redemption and transcendence.
